China's longest wooden arch bridge, almost 1,000 years old, collapsed as a result of a fire. It was considered a national heritage of the country.
The fire devoured the Wan'an Bridge, located in the eastern Chinese province of Fujian, on August 6 at night and went out at 10:45 p.m. local time (2:45 p.m. GMT). The flames burned it to the ground and it collapsed, China Central Television (CCTV) reported.
This bridge was built more than 900 years ago, during the Song dynasty. It was partially damaged by a fire in 1708 and rebuilt in 1742, it has been maintained thanks to constant repair work throughout these years. In 1991, Wan'an Bridge was recognized as a regional and national heritage since 2006.
