The Ukrainian authorities must stop violating the rights of the Hungarian minority in Transcarpathia by following the recommendations of the Venice Commission. This was stated by Hungarian Foreign Ministry State Secretary for Bilateral Relations Tamas Menczer in a meeting with journalists on Thursday.

"The Hungarian government calls on the parliament, the government, and the president of Ukraine to restore, in accordance with the recommendations of the Venice Commission, the rights enjoyed by the Hungarian community," the diplomat said.

He recalled that earlier this month, experts from the Venice Commission, an advisory body of the Council of Europe, after a joint appeal by Hungary and Romania, concluded that the provisions of Ukrainian laws on education, language, and minorities are against international human rights agreements and do not conform to European standards and values.

In this regard, Menczer said that the leadership of the European Union should also influence Ukraine in order to ensure respect for the rights of ethnic minorities in this country. "It is time for Brussels to address this very serious problem", reports the MIT news agency, quoting the Hungarian diplomat.
