Saudi Arabia, currently presiding over the Islamic Summit, has urgently called for a high-level meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Nations (OIC) to address the escalating military situation in Gaza and its impact on civilians. The meeting is scheduled to take place in Jeddah on Wednesday. The OIC, representing 57 member nations across four continents, identifies itself as the collective voice of the Muslim world.
This critical gathering follows Saudi Arabia's suspension of talks regarding potential normalization of ties with Israel. The kingdom, home to Islam's holiest sites, has never recognized Israel and did not participate in the 2020 US-brokered Abraham Accords, in which some of its Gulf neighbors established formal ties with Israel.
The recent large-scale attack launched by Hamas on Israel and the subsequent retaliatory bombing campaign have escalated tensions, resulting in significant casualties. The situation has raised concerns globally, prompting urgent discussions within the OIC to address the crisis and ensure the safety and stability of the region.
Saudi Arabia's stance on the matter has evolved, with increased expressions of concern about the plight of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. Riyadh has emphasized its commitment to denouncing attacks on innocent civilians and the displacement of Palestinians, marking a shift in its approach towards the ongoing conflict.
