The 16th death anniversary of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto is being solemnly observed across the country. The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has meticulously arranged the main commemorative function at Garhi Khuda Bakhsh.
A significant public gathering is slated to take place at Garhi Khuda Bakhsh, with a grand stage set up for the top leadership of PPP. The venue has been adorned with party flags and posters of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto.
The scheduled speakers at the public meeting include Chairman PPP Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, former President and co-chairman PPP Asif Ali Zardari, and other central leaders of PPP. Special security measures, including the deployment of at least 8,000 police personnel, including women police, have been implemented to ensure law and order during the event.
The security arrangements also include the presence of the Bomb Disposal Squad, bomb detectors, scanning machines, jammers, watch towers, walk-through gates, and police vehicles, all monitored by high-ranking officials of the Sindh Police.
Benazir Bhutto, born on June 21, 1953, in Karachi’s Pinto Hospital, hailed from the renowned political Bhutto family of Sindh. The daughter of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, the founder of PPP, and granddaughter of Sir Shahnawaz Bhutto, she was the eldest among her four siblings. Her mother, Begum Nusrat Bhutto, had an Iranian-Kurdish heritage.
On December 27, 2007, Benazir Bhutto attended a massive public meeting at Liaquat Bagh, Rawalpindi. Radiant and in high spirits, she delivered a passionate speech reminiscent of her father's style.
Tragically, as she was acknowledging the chants of supporters while standing through the sun-roof of her car, a terrorist shot her in the head, and an explosion followed. Rushed to the hospital, amid the grieving supporters, Babar Awan announced to the media that Benazir Bhutto had succumbed to her injuries.
Her untimely death marked a tragic chapter in Pakistan's political history.
