Netanyahu signals end to Gaza war phase amid renewed bombings

Netanyahu signals end to Gaza war phase amid renewed bombings

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu indicated that the intense phase of the Gaza war is tapering off, though Israeli forces continued airstrikes after his statement. Netanyahu clarified in a TV interview that while the fierce fighting in Rafah is winding down, the broader conflict is ongoing.

The conflict began with Hamas militants' attack on southern Israel on October 7, resulting in numerous casualties, mainly civilians. Netanyahu reiterated Israel's objectives: securing the release of kidnapped individuals and dismantling Hamas rule in Gaza. He rejected Hamas's call for a permanent ceasefire, reaffirming Israel's support for its own proposal endorsed by US President Joe Biden.

Recently, the UN Security Council supported a ceasefire plan, which Netanyahu acknowledged but emphasized Israel's stance. Domestically, protests have urged new elections and the release of hostages held by Hamas.

In Gaza, ongoing military operations have severely damaged infrastructure, impeding humanitarian efforts. The United Nations reported extensive destruction of Gaza's road network, complicating aid delivery.

Netanyahu's government faces challenges at home and abroad, including strained relations with the US over arms supplies and differing strategies to resolve the conflict.
