Austrian Citizen Christian Weber Released by Iran

Tehran – On Saturday, Iranian authorities released Austrian citizen Christian Weber, who had been held in Iran’s West Azerbaijan Province. Mizan, the news agency affiliated with Iran's judiciary, confirmed the release.

According to Mizan, Weber was handed over to the Austrian ambassador in Tehran, who will now oversee his departure from the country. Mizan did not disclose the exact charges against Weber and attempts to reach the Austrian embassy for more information before office hours were unsuccessful.

In 2022, Austria reported that one of its citizens, identified as Weber, was detained in Iran. Austria noted at the time that the arrest was not connected to the widespread protests that followed the death of Mahsa Amini, a Kurdish-Iranian woman who died in police custody. Amini's death sparked months of demonstrations against Iran’s Islamic government, representing one of the most significant challenges to the country's leaders in recent decades.

Mizan mentioned that Weber’s release was granted in the spirit of 'Islamic mercy'.
