Richard Gadd, the creator and star of the Netflix show Baby Reindeer, had a big night at the 2024 Primetime Emmy Awards. The show won four awards, including Best Limited or Anthology Series. The other nominees in this category were Fargo, Lessons in Chemistry, Ripley, and True Detective: Night Country.
In his acceptance speech, Gadd addressed the current challenges facing the entertainment industry. “I know the industry is in a slump right now, and it might pressure networks to cut budgets and play it safe. But no slump is ever overcome without taking risks,” Gadd said.
He emphasized that Baby Reindeer has shown that success doesn't always come from having big stars, well-known intellectual property, long-running series, or traditional storytelling. “There’s no set formula to this,” Gadd told the audience. “You don’t need all those things to make a hit.” His words were met with cheers from the crowd.
Gadd encouraged creators to be bold: “Take risks, push boundaries, and explore the uncomfortable. Dare to fail in order to achieve.”
Besides the award for Best Limited or Anthology Series, Baby Reindeer also won three other Emmys. Jessica Gunning, who stars in the show, won Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series. Richard Gadd himself won Best Actor in a Limited Series and Best Writer for the show. In total, Baby Reindeer received four awards out of the 11 nominations it had.
