Riyadh – Saudi Arabia's capital is set to take a major step in its urban transformation and open the Riyadh Metro, the world’s longest driverless metro system, on Wednesday, November 27.
The initial phase of the ambitious $22.5 billion (SR84.4 billion) project will see three of the six planned metro lines go live, significantly enhancing public transportation options across the city. The remaining lines are expected to be operational by mid-December, completing the first phase of the network.
The Riyadh Metro, a key initiative under Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030, aims to reduce the city’s dependency on cars, ease traffic congestion, and position Riyadh as a global trade and commerce hub. The new metro system is part of the kingdom’s broader plan to modernize urban infrastructure and diversify its economy.
Key Routes to Open in First Phase
The first three metro lines will connect major areas across Riyadh, including a route from Al Orouba to Batha, a line connecting King Khalid International Airport Road, and another serving the intersection of Abdulrahman Bin Auf Street with Sheikh Hassan Bin Hussein Street.
By mid-December, the network will expand further, with additional lines covering key areas such as King Abdullah Road, Al Madina, and King Abdulaziz Road. This expansion is expected to greatly enhance both capacity and the overall coverage of the metro system.
A Landmark Project for Saudi Arabia
First approved in 2012, the Riyadh Metro has faced delays due to logistical hurdles and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the partial opening represents a significant milestone in the kingdom’s vision to overhaul its public infrastructure, reduce carbon emissions, and create a more sustainable urban environment.
Sustainability and Innovation at the Core
Sustainability is a key focus of the Riyadh Metro project. The system incorporates solar panels at stations and depots, which are expected to generate 20% of the energy required for essential operations. Additionally, energy-efficient trains and regenerative braking technology have been integrated to reduce energy consumption. The metro network will eventually run entirely on renewable energy, further reinforcing Riyadh’s commitment to environmental goals.
What’s Next?
Authorities are expected to release further details regarding ticket pricing and discount packages in the coming days, as commuters prepare for the launch of this transformative new service.
The Riyadh Metro is poised to revolutionize the city’s transport landscape, offering residents and visitors a modern, efficient, and sustainable alternative to car travel as the kingdom continues its push toward greater economic and environmental sustainability.
