Pakistani Military Court Convicted 60 Civilians Over Military Attacks After Imran Khan’s Arrest

A Pakistani military court has sentenced 60 civilians to jail terms ranging from 2 to 10 years for their involvement in attacks on military facilities. The attacks took place after the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan in May 2023. The military’s media wing shared this update on Thursday.

Among those sentenced are a relative of Imran Khan and two retired military officers. Earlier this week, 25 others were also convicted for similar charges related to the protests.

Imran Khan’s Arrest Sparked Unrest Imran Khan’s arrest in May 2023 triggered nationwide protests, where his supporters attacked military bases and damaged army properties. These protests marked an unprecedented response against Pakistan’s powerful military generals.

The military’s media wing emphasized its stance: "The Nation, Government, and the Armed Forces are committed to upholding justice and maintaining the rule of law.”

Concerns Over Military Courts These sentences have raised concerns among Imran Khan’s supporters, who fear military courts are being used unfairly in cases involving the former leader. Khan, who faces multiple charges, has claimed the accusations are politically motivated.

The international community has also expressed criticism:

  • The United States said it is “deeply concerned” about these sentences.
  • The United Kingdom highlighted that trying civilians in military courts “lacks transparency” and undermines the right to a fair trial.
  • The European Union stated that these sentences conflict with Pakistan’s obligations under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR).

Military Courts Defend Trial Process In response to the backlash, Pakistan’s information minister stated during a press conference that the military court process ensures a fair trial. He explained that defendants are provided access to lawyers, can meet their families, and have the opportunity to appeal the verdict twice—first in military courts and then in civilian high courts.

Supporters Deny Wrongdoing Imran Khan’s supporters have denied any involvement in the attacks, while the former prime minister maintains that the charges against him are aimed at removing him from the political arena.

The military and government have dismissed claims of unfair treatment and stated that all actions are in line with the country’s laws.
