Lahore – The Punjab government is set to introduce Pakistan's first-ever Minority Card in early 2025 to provide financial support to underprivileged minorities. The initiative, announced by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, will ensure that minorities receive financial aid every three months.
The announcement occurred during a Christmas ceremony at Lahore's largest church, the House of Prayer. The Minority Card is expected to bring a significant change to the lives of Christians, Hindus, Sikhs, and other minority communities in Punjab by ensuring their welfare and reducing their financial dependence.
Maryam Nawaz’s Vision for an Inclusive Society
CM Maryam Nawaz reaffirmed her commitment to creating an inclusive society during her address. She stated, “The state is like a mother, and as your Chief Minister, I am like a mother to you. There is no place for discrimination in my heart based on religion. Muslims, Christians, Hindus, and Sikhs are all equal and the pride of my life.”
She emphasized the importance of religious harmony, declaring it a collective responsibility to protect minorities. "For me, both minorities and majorities are equal. Every project initiated by the Punjab government has contributions from all communities," she added.
Special Focus on the Christian Community
CM Maryam Nawaz revealed that the budget for the Christian community had been increased by 200% under her government. She further expressed her desire to increase it even more, stating that providing for the Christian community was not a favor but their right.
She also recalled her visit to Mariamabad during Easter, where she celebrated with the Christian community and received a warm welcome. Maryam Nawaz highlighted that it was the first time in 120 years that a Punjab Chief Minister had visited the Mariamabad Church for Easter celebrations.
Nawaz Sharif’s Christmas Message
Maryam Nawaz shared that her father, Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, extended his Christmas greetings to the Christian community. She quoted him as saying, “Do not refer to anyone as a minority; they are as much a part of Pakistan as everyone else.”
Religious Harmony in Punjab
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz declared Punjab as the hub of interfaith harmony in Pakistan. She acknowledged the Christian community's contributions to education, health, and national development, paying tribute to their sacrifices and hard work.
She assured the audience that the Punjab government is taking strong measures to protect the rights of minorities and improve their quality of life.
Christmas Celebration with 10,000 Attendees
The Christmas ceremony saw 10,000 attendees, and Maryam Nawaz brought 10,000 cakes as a token of love for the community. “I share in your happiness and pray for the prosperity and joy of all minorities,” she said at the event's conclusion.
