Karachi Weather Update: Cold Wave to Strengthen with Rain in Balochistan
The cold weather currently gripping Karachi is expected to intensify from January 4, 2025, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD). The cold wave in Karachi has already caused temperatures to drop significantly, and westerly winds are predicted to bring rain in Balochistan, which may be followed by an increase in cold winds across the city.
Weather Forecast for Karachi: Cold and Dry Conditions Expected
Although the cold weather in Karachi may slightly ease today and tomorrow (Friday), the PMD has forecasted that westerly winds entering the country will bring rain in Balochistan. These rains will be followed by a cold spell in Karachi, where the temperature is expected to dip further. The PMD anticipates cold and dry weather conditions in the city.
The minimum temperature in Karachi was recorded at 13.5°C, with humidity levels at 58% and a 6 km/h wind from the north. Karachi residents have already felt the bite of winter temperatures multiple times in recent weeks, with temperatures falling to 9.1°C and 9.5°C in December.
Air Quality in Karachi: Poor Air Quality Amid Cold Weather
In addition to the cold weather, Karachi's air quality has also worsened. On December 31, 2024, the city recorded its highest pollution levels, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) reaching a dangerous level of 237, which falls under the "very unhealthy" category, according to IQAir, a Swiss air quality monitoring group.
Furthermore, the concentration of toxic PM2.5 pollutants was recorded at 162 µg/m³, which is 32.4 times higher than the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines for safe air quality. This makes Karachi's air quality particularly hazardous for residents, especially those with pre-existing respiratory conditions.
