Six Convicts Released After Military Court Pardon in May 9 Riots

Six prisoners have been freed from Central Jail Peshawar after being granted pardons by military courts for their involvement in the May 9, 2023, riots. The convicts, three from Murdan and three from Lower Dir, had been transferred to Peshawar prison following their sentences from military courts last week.

Earlier today, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) revealed that 19 people convicted for their roles in the May 9 riots were pardoned by military courts. The pardons were granted after the convicts submitted pleas for mercy.

The ISPR statement explained that during their sentences, the convicted individuals exercised their legal right to request clemency. Out of 19, along with 67 others involved in the riots, 48 petitions for mercy were sent for legal review by the Courts of Appeal.

The amnesty given to these 19 convicts was based on humanitarian grounds and in line with legal procedures. The ISPR confirmed that the remaining petitions will be processed within the set legal timelines.

The individuals granted amnesty include Muhammad Ayaz, Sami Ullah, Laiq Ahmad, and others. Their sentences were annulled, and they will be released after completing the required formalities.
