The Punjab government has initiated the feasibility study and design phase for Lahore’s first underground metro train, the Blue Line Metro Train, marking a major step in the city's public transport system.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has directed Provincial Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan to expedite the metro train project, ensuring rapid progress in the public transport sector.
The Blue Line Metro Train Lahore will span 27 kilometers, connecting Valencia Town to Babu Sabu Chowk, passing through major transport hubs such as Johar Town, Faisal Town, Garden Town, Kalma Chowk, Gulberg Main Boulevard, Jail Road, Ferozepur Road, and Allama Iqbal Town.
The project is expected to serve over 250,000 passengers daily, improving urban mobility and reducing traffic congestion in Lahore. The Punjab government has set a three-year completion timeline, utilizing advanced construction techniques such as high-speed tunneling at a rate of six meters per day.
The estimated cost of the Blue Line Metro Train exceeds 600 billion rupees, though the final budget will be determined after completing the feasibility study and design phase.
International financial institutions from China, Japan, and France have expressed interest in funding the Lahore metro train project. The Punjab Transport Department initially conducted a metro train study in 2016, which proposed a partially underground section. However, the latest transport feasibility study conducted in June 2024 has confirmed that the Lahore metro train Blue Line will be fully underground.
This mega infrastructure project is expected to enhance public transport accessibility, modernize urban transit, and boost economic development in Lahore, Punjab.
