Iran Conflict Now Spilling Into New Waters, Tensions Rising Across the Region

WASHINGTON — The fighting tied to Iran took a turn for the worse this weekend, spreading well beyond the Gulf and into both the Red Sea and the Caspian Sea. This happened even though the US had temporarily stopped its direct strikes — and it’s stirring up fresh worries about regional stability and the world’s energy supply.

US military officials say the naval blockade on Iran is still active. But nobody’s explained why the nightly airstrikes, which had gone on for nearly two weeks straight, suddenly stopped. One senior official close to President Trump said Washington is still hoping to settle things through diplomacy — though Iran will face real consequences if those talks go nowhere.

Reports from US media suggest Trump backed off from ramping up military action after his own advisers pushed back. Their concerns? Running through weapons stockpiles too fast, damaging ties with Gulf allies, and rattling energy markets worldwide.

The Gulf itself has stayed fairly quiet, but that’s not true everywhere. Yemen’s Houthi movement — long backed by Iran — says it launched missile and drone strikes on Saudi Aramco’s oil sites in Jizan and Yanbu, both along the Red Sea. Online videos showed smoke billowing near the Jizan refinery, one of Saudi Arabia’s key oil-processing hubs. Saudi defenses say they shot down more missiles headed for Yanbu.

These strikes have people worried the fighting could spread even further along vital shipping lanes, especially given the earlier trouble near the Strait of Hormuz. Still, Houthi officials insist they’re not trying to shut down the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, another crucial trade route.

Elsewhere, Iran is pointing fingers at Ukraine, accusing it of attacking one of its commercial ships in the Caspian Sea. In attack Iran says killed one crew member and wounded another. Tehran summoned Ukraine’s top diplomat to formally protest, calling it a hostile act. That accusation surfaced not long after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed Russia has been feeding Iran satellite intelligence to support its operations in the region.

Back in Yemen, the fighting has picked up too. Forces loyal to the internationally recognized government hit Houthi positions with airstrikes in Marib and Al-Jawf provinces. Officials on both sides report troop movements, and there’s growing concern that the ceasefire, which had held for years,  has basically fallen apart.

Analysts say this expanding conflict now puts multiple regions at risk all at once, threatening global shipping routes, oil supplies, and the broader security of the Middle East.
