PM Imposes Levy of Rs305 on High-Octane, Bans Its Use in Government Vehicles

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced an immediate ban on the use of high-octane fuel in all government vehicles. The decision comes alongside a sharp increase in the levy on this type of fuel.

High-Octane Levy Hikes to Rs305

According to a notification from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the levy on high-octane fuel has been raised by Rs200 per litre, bringing it to Rs305.37 per litre. This pushes the total price of High Octane Blending Component (HOBC) to Rs535 per litre.

The increase in the levy was decided during a meeting chaired by the Prime Minister.

Government Vehicles Must Follow the Ban

The PMO stated that if any government department needs to use high-octane fuel, it must be paid for personally. Using premium fuel at government expense is now strictly prohibited.

The decision aims to promote efficient and responsible use of national resources, according to the PMO.

Implementation and Monitoring

Prime Minister Shehbaz directed all federal departments, authorities, and subordinate institutions to enforce the ban immediately. He also ordered the creation of a monitoring system to ensure compliance. Violations will result in strict action.

Earlier measures have already reduced fuel use in government vehicles by 50%, with 60% of vehicles grounded. These steps helped save money and provide cheaper fuel for the public.

Focus on Public Resources and Austerity

The Prime Minister emphasized that cutting unnecessary expenses and strict implementation of austerity policies are crucial. The ban on high-octane fuel is expected to reduce government spending and allow better use of public resources.

Levy Applies Only to Luxury Vehicles

The government approved the Rs200 per litre increase for high-octane fuel used in luxury cars. Petrol prices for ordinary vehicles, public transport, and air travel remain unchanged.

The PMO said the measure is expected to save Rs9 billion per month, which will be used to support the general public during the ongoing fuel crisis.
