Speaking at the event, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif called Karakoram One an “extraordinary and impressive project.” He said completing such a large technology project in a short time showed Pakistan’s growing ability in the technology sector.

The prime minister said the country’s progress would continue despite challenges and appreciated the efforts of Field Marshal Asim Munir and government officials involved in the project.

He also directed all ministries to move away from traditional paper-based systems and adopt fully digital working methods using the new infrastructure.

Federal minister Ahad Khan Cheema said artificial intelligence and data-based systems would help improve transparency, accountability, and the timely completion of government decisions.

Shaza Fatima Khawaja said Pakistan was moving beyond basic digital services and entering an AI-driven era where technology would play a bigger role in governance, public services, and social protection programmes.

What is Karakoram One?

Karakoram One is Pakistan’s first sovereign digital infrastructure platform developed under Sky47. It is designed to support the country’s shift towards a cloud-based and data-driven economy.

The project will eventually include connected data centres in Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi. This network will help ensure continuous services during emergencies and protect important data through backup systems in different locations.

How will Karakoram One work?

The platform will allow government departments, private companies, banks, telecom operators, and international cloud providers to securely store servers and sensitive data inside Pakistan.

It will offer services including:

  • Cloud computing
  • Artificial intelligence solutions
  • Secure data storage
  • High-performance computing
  • Protection of government and business records
  • Faster digital services

The facility is planned to have a power capacity of more than 50 megawatts and will be able to support over 3,000 server racks, allowing it to handle large AI projects and advanced computing needs.

According to Sky47, Karakoram One will connect with multiple internet providers and international submarine cable networks to provide fast and reliable digital connectivity.

Officials said the data centre will help Pakistan keep sensitive information within the country, reduce reliance on foreign digital infrastructure, improve data security, and support technological growth.

Pakistan Television described the inauguration as an important milestone in the country’s digital transformation and AI development plans.
