Trump Pauses ‘Project Freedom’ as Strait of Hormuz Tensions Stay High

US President Donald Trump has announced a temporary pause in “Project Freedom,” a US naval mission aimed at helping commercial ships move safely through the Strait of Hormuz.

The decision came just one day after the operation began. Trump said “great progress” had been made in talks with Iran. He added that both sides agreed to pause the mission for a short time.

According to Trump, Pakistan played an important role in diplomacy. It reportedly acted as a mediator between Washington and Tehran.

Even with the pause, Trump made it clear that US restrictions on Iranian ports will continue.

The move surprised many. Earlier, senior officials like Marco Rubio and Pete Hegseth had said the mission would continue. They stressed it was needed to protect shipping in the region.

Rubio also said the earlier US-Israeli military campaign, called “Operation Epic Fury,” had achieved its goals. However, he warned that Iran still needs to choose a peaceful path.

Iran reacted differently. State media called the pause a victory. It claimed Trump had stepped back after failing to fully secure the Strait for global trade.

Tensions in the region remain high. A ceasefire was announced in April, but the situation is still fragile. Iran accuses the US and its allies of increasing pressure through sanctions and military actions. The US, on the other hand, blames Iran for threats to shipping routes.

Iran’s parliamentary speaker, Mohammad Ghalibaf, said the situation is “intolerable” for the US. He added that Iran will continue to resist pressure.

There are also fresh security concerns. The UK Maritime Trade Operations agency reported that a cargo ship was hit by an unknown object in the Strait of Hormuz. This has raised fears that tensions could rise again.

The United Arab Emirates said its air defenses stopped missiles and drones for the second day in a row. Iran denied launching any attacks.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important trade routes. About 20% of global oil and gas passes through it. Any disruption here can affect energy prices and global markets.
