The United States has imposed sanctions on several companies that are believed to help sell Iranian crude oil. The move was announced by the U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC).
“Disrupting the Iranian regime’s revenue is critical to helping curb its nuclear ambitions,” said Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
The sanctions also include six vessels and the Iranian airline Mahan Air.
Earlier, the United States had sanctioned Russia’s major oil companies, Lukoil and Rosneft, along with their subsidiaries, over what the U.S. says is Russia’s lack of commitment to ending the war in Ukraine.
In a statement, the Treasury Department said, “Today, the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) is imposing further sanctions due to Russia’s lack of serious commitment to a peace process to end the war in Ukraine. This action targets Russia’s two largest oil companies, Rosneft and Lukoil, as well as several of their subsidiaries based in Russia.”
