Responding to the question, Bilal Akbar Khan said that significant progress has already been made on the electric tram project. According to the minister, the contract process has been completed, and the project has now entered the procurement phase.
He explained that the government is currently working on acquiring the necessary equipment and resources needed to launch the service. He expressed confidence that people will see the electric tram running on Lahore’s roads during the new financial year.
The minister further revealed that the original plan for the project included the development of a metro system. However, that plan has now been postponed, and the government is currently focusing on the electric tram project instead.
Addressing environmental concerns, Bilal Akbar Khan assured the public that no trees would be cut down for the construction and development of the new transport system. He emphasized that the project would be implemented in a way that protects the environment and preserves the city’s green spaces.
Speaking about the proposed route, the minister said the electric tram will operate on key roads in Lahore. The planned route will begin from the Central Business District (CBD) and extend to Jail Road. Another section of the route will run from Mall Road to Istanbul Chowk.
The project is expected to provide residents with a modern, environmentally friendly, and efficient mode of public transportation. The introduction of electric trams is also expected to help reduce traffic congestion and support cleaner urban transport in the city.
With the contract phase completed and procurement work underway, the Punjab government hopes to move ahead with implementation and bring the long-awaited electric tram service to Lahore in the coming financial year.
